When we saw Silver Linings Playbook this weekend the entire audience erupted into applause as the credits rolled. The applause was well-earned; you'd have to be pretty dour to find much fault in David O. Russell's screwball dramedy. Hell, I can't stand gambling or football (or heretofore Bradley Cooper, for that matter) and I thought it sublime. While its plot follows the rom-com playbook, it has the essential ingredient of every once-in-a-blue-moon great romantic comedy: specificity. Nothing is smoothed around the edges, nothing comes cheaply. It weaves its screwball web with football statistics and ballroom dance, just as Bringing Up Baby did with dinosaur bones and leopards. And, as my husband said, it's nice to see Robert DeNiro acting again. Poster sketch by J. Wassmansdorf.
