The hubby has decided that a cat that appears in our yard, stalking around our prairie garden, is evil. He thinks it will kill all the cute baby bunnies that eat our clover. Every time he sees it he goes after it like Cato after Clouseau. So Lena and I bought him this card for Father's Day. Because, you know, sometimes cats can be evil and shoot laser beams and stuff.
My mom gifted me a small bounty of vintage pulp paperbacks this weekend. This one's my favorite. From the back cover:
She heard the door open quietly. In a panic, she sat up and called, "Who's that?"
"It's I, Anny; don't be afraid." He closed the door and she heard the bolt slip in place. He snapped on a flashlight he held cupped in his hand. "Don't turn on the light -- please. I just had to see you."
She put her head back against the pillow, far back. Her eyes were black pools, her lips were full and slightly parted. Somewhere far back in memory she heard a voice, a taunting voice, call: "Lena's daughter, Lena's daughter."
My mom didn't even notice. If Lena has a daughter and names her Anna, we're in trouble.

I'm not baking for the True Blood premiere on Sunday, because really, you can't top these cupcakes by Kati Peck. I may try some of these Tru Blood cocktails, though.
1992 was my last year as a teenager. I remember spending much of it pondering gender politics, listening to Elvis Costello, and making drawings using the back of my dorm room door as an easel. This mix reveals that I was also listening to lots of Red Hot Chili Peppers, and that my idolizations of Patti Smith and PJ Harvey had emerged. It also includes selections from the most magical album of that year, Automatic for the People, and the closest thing to an earnest Steely Dan song. And is there anything that screams 1992 more than Tori Amos' cover of "Smells Like Teen Spirit"?

I just ordered a copy of Sonja Ahlers' book The Selves. Sonja assembles personal portraits from popular culture, combining song lyrics, found images and watercolor to create an identity scrapbook. Really, it's just totally rad. See more of Sonja's work here. You can also buy some fierce bunnies at her shop.
