Mixtape Memory: Riding in Cars with Boys

During the summer of 1991 I worked as a waitress and sometime hostess at a popular Italian restaurant. I had one of those obsessive teenage crushes on a guy I worked with; my raging hormones had morphed him into some sort of dark, sinewy, seductive hero, when really he was a directionless 29-year-old waiter who had just fathered a baby with his ex-girlfriend. My parents would eat at the restaurant often, and one day he spotted them drive up in my dad's new convertible. Soon he was asking me to take him for a ride in it. I decided to make a mix for the outing, a collection of music that I thought would impress him. Apparently it didn't work, since (thankfully) nothing happened between us after our drive. But I still like it.
