Breakup Blues

Like anyone, I've had my share of painful breakups. How I wish I could have watched Sita Sings the Blues while I was licking those old wounds! Nina Paley is the extraordinary animator who, fueled by the pain of her divorce, made the film on her computer. Paley effortlessly mixes the story of her own breakup with the story of the Ramayana, the ancient Sanskrit epic of Sita, a blindly devoted wife of a very popular prince. Paley voices Sita through 1920s jazz standards sang by Annette Hanshaw and has shadow puppet scholars provide hilarious annotations to Sita's story. What charming lemonade Paley made from her lemons! Better still, she is streaming the entire film for free here. Just watch the trippy opening sequence and you'll be hooked.
