The affection I have for R.E.M. can best be described as a lingering imprint of love for an ex-flame. Every time I hear Michael Stipe's voice, "vivid and impassioned, yet deliberately unheroic," I pet my stereo with affection. I've clipped everything with their images on it, including this old New Yorker illustration, for years. Since the departure of Bill Berry (10 years ago!), I was blown away by 2001's Reveal, but little else. Their new album, Accelerate, initially sounds reminiscent of 1994's Monster, primarily because they are rocking out more that usual. You can hear the new album, in its entirety, here.

Join or Die!

Perhaps because I am sucked into John Adams (Ben Franklin playing naked chess!), I'm thinking of all things colonial today. I'm loving this card from Strychnine Frosting's etsy shop.

Guinness also tastes good in America

St. Patrick's Day has always made me want to chuck a potato at someone, and I never knew why. Thank you, Stuff White People Like! Mystery solved.
On a positive note, EW has 17 Irish Classics to raise a glass to, including In The Name of the Father. My footnote to that selection is You Made Me The Thief of Your Heart, a great marriage of anthemic Bono and Sinead's cool fury.
But in honor of Conan, I think I'll eat some melba toast and go to bed early tonight.

Steal the air, Michel!

From Entertainment Weekly: "Be Kind Rewind is, on one level, then, about the magic that can happen in fairy tales — and only in fairy tales — when enough people who like the good old ways band together to keep things simple yet cunning, like the handmade-crafts e-tailers who sell on etsy.com." The question is, can Michel Gondry achieve this kind of alchemy making a mainstream movie? He certainly has before, and while Be Kind Rewind is far from perfect, how can you not love a movie with visual details like a keyboard made out of hands and a soundtrack that includes Your Feets Too Big? Plus, he has opened up an interactive exhibit in the spirit of his movie, letting people make their own "sweded" versions of studio films. Everything he does, from encouraging sweding to painting with Bjork and a piano is an attempt to make entertainment less corporate and more handmade. Whether successful or not, I love him for it.
